The fable is about two dogs that are brothers and best friends. They end up on the streets in the wrong neighborhood and have to fend for themselves because no one will help them get back home. This fable explains how people are to busy or choose to ignore children who are in the streets because of their ethnicity and don’t try and help them find shelter or food leaving the children no choice.
Roger and Max were brothers who love and cared for each other. They lived in a town called Dogs, which was the territory of dogs and dogs only. Roger was the older brother and he is the one who usually comes up with ideas to do with his brother Max. Max is the younger brother who usually follows Roger around and does what ever he tells him to do.
They had just spent the whole day inside and their mother told them, “ Go for a walk outside. I mean look at the sky, its beautiful and sunny. You two should go outside and enjoy the day.”
“Okay mom.” They got off their butts and headed outside and they decided to race each other. They were about three mile away from their house now and the sky started to turn gray. They didn’t notice the sunshine disappear because they were having so much fun until the wind started to really blow against their hair. "Come on Max. We better head home before anything bad happens.” Max followed Roger home, but before they were able to reach their house a tornado struck and took them with it. Luckily they remained unharmed and landed in a tree.
“Brother where are we? I’m scared,” asked Max in a wimpy voice.
“I don’t know, let me check.” He poked his head out of the tree, examined his surroundings, and went back in the tree petrified. He stuttered, “ The... the... the... aa...ar.”
“What is it brother? Is something wrong?” Roger finally pulled himself together after five minutes and was able to speak.
“There are cats everywhere. We are in a different town. We’re in Meow” They stayed in the tree for a while until they could think of something to do. “ Here’s what we’ll do Max. We’ll just go out there and ask for help.” So, they got out and went up to a cat. “ Excuse me sir, can you help us get back to our home?” Max was now hiding behind Roger because the man looked mean.
“Ugh get away from you filthy mutt. Go away and don’t talk to me again.” After the man had said this he pushed Roger out of the way making him topple over Max. They asked other cats for help, but Roger and Max got the exact same treatment or the cats just kept on walking pretending they weren’t there. Finally they gave up and decided to wait till morning, when there are les cats outside awake because it was the cats were starting to get hostile towards them.
“ Roger I’m hungry, can we get some food.” Roger shook his head instead of speaking, for fear that the cats might hear them hiding. Max stopped complaining and they went to sleep till morning came. “ Wake up. Roger wake up!”
“Okay I’m up. Lets go get some food.” They got out of their hiding spot and Roger as right. There weren’t as many cats out as there were at night. They sneaked into one of the stores and started to grab, to smell, and to taste the food. The manager had been doing stock inventory that day and he saw the dogs.
“ Hey!” Roger and Max started to run for their lives. “ Get back here you filthy dogs and give me back my food.” They got away and went into hiding again. They could overhear the manager of the store talking to the cat police. “ There are dogs roaming our streets and committing...” they left before he had finished yelling at the officer. The two brothers lived on like this for about a month heading in the direction of Dogs. They used a map to guide them and continued to take food, but only what they needed. After a month they reached there way back home.
“Roger! Max! Is it really you two? What happened to you boys, you had me and your father worried.” Roger and Max explained to their parents what happened and were glad to be home. On the other hand their mom had become a bit over protective and prevents them from going outside for to long or leave the house for that matter, but the two brothers were just happy to be home. After their event, they decided its for the best that they don't wander off to far from their house.
